L'ECO DI BERGAMO. - Catholic daily newspaper, founded as one of the expressions of the social movement of Italian Catholics, which had one of its main centers in Bergamo, by a group headed by Niccolò Rezzara and Stanislao Medolago Albani. The first issue came out on 1 May 1880; its first director was G. B. Caironi, who had been director of the «Cittadino di Brescia». The newspaper immediately took on the very lively stance that it has always maintained, but its most flourishing period began in 1888, and its importance, though local, has steadily increased. It is now directed by don Andrea Spada and is the most widely circulated newspaper in Bergamo and the diocese; it is linked, together with the other Italian Catholic dailies, in the S.I.R. (Servizio informazioni romano), from which it receives the Roman and Vatican news bulletin.
