L'ECO DI BERGAMO, THE. - A Catholic daily founded as one of the expressions of the social movement of Italian Catholics, which had Bergamo as one of its principal centres, by a group led by Niccolò Rezzara and Stanislao Medolago Albani. The first issue appeared on 10 May 1880; the first editor was G. B. Caironi, who had previously been editor of *Il Cittadino di Brescia*.
The newspaper immediately adopted a lively stance that it has always maintained, but its most flourishing period began in 1888, and its importance, though local, has continued to grow. It is now edited by Don Andrea Spada and is the most widely circulated newspaper in Bergamo within the diocese; it is connected with the other Italian Catholic dailies through the S.I.R. (Roman Information Service), from which it receives its Roman and Vatican news.
