CLEMENT OF OHRID, Saint. - Called "the Slav" or "the Bulgarian," bishop, d. in 916. He accompanied Sts. Cyril and Methodius on the mission to Moravia. After the death of St. Methodius (885), C., Naum, Angelarius, Constantine and other disciples, expelled from Moravia, were received in Bulgaria by King Boris (852-89). There they created two literary centers, one directed by Naum, near Preslav, the other at Devol (present-day Albania), directed by C. In 893 the tsar Simeon (893-927) appointed C. bishop of Velitsa. C. had at his school ca. 3,500 disciples. He was buried in the monastery he founded on Lake Ohrid, whence the name C. of O.

To C., who began his writings in Moravia, are attributed the Life of St. Constantine-Cyril, that of St. Methodius, the panegyric of St. Cyril and the Office in his honor. In Bulgaria he wrote numerous sermons and probably also the Treatise on the True Faith. He translated many writings from Greek.

C. was venerated as a saint immediately after his death (feast 27 July). In the reborn Bulgaria he was chosen as patron of the University of Sofia.
