CODUCCI, MAURO - Facade of the church of S. Zaccaria (1477), continued on the base built by A. Gambello - Venice.
CODUCCI, MAURO detto MORO (MORETTO). - Architect, b. at Lenna in Val Brembana around 1440, d. in 1504. He appears active in Venice for the first time in 1468 for the construction of S. Michele on the island; in 1490 he appraises the work of the Lombardo (v.) in the scuola of S. Marco; in 1498 he begins the staircase of the scuola of S. Giovanni Evangelista.
In the church of S. Michele on the island, C. introduces into the facade in Istrian stone that curvilinear crowning which reappears in S. Zaccaria, where C. continued the work of Antonio Gambello, raising upon the Gothicizing base the facade, grand and picturesque, crowned by three arched pediments.
Continuing the work of the Lombardo, C. also completed the front of the scuola of S. Marco (now a civil hospital), especially in the asymmetrical crowning terminated by semicircular pediments and in the interior. In the scuola of S. Giovanni Evangelista, by P. Lombardo, C. built the two-flight staircase, contrived with great skill in a narrow space.
C. also worked on the construction of S. Maria Formosa and of S. Giovanni Crisostomo. In S. Maria della Carità the chapel of the Salvatore and the grand monument of the doges Marco and Agostino Barbarigo are attributed to him. His is the bell tower of S. Pietro in Castello (1488-1490). An aedicule in the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo is also ascribed to him.
C.'s work in civil architecture is uncertain: among other things, the Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi, the Palazzetto Corner and the Clock Tower can be attributed to him.
