CODUCCI, Mauro, called Moro (Moretto). Architect, b. at Lenna in Val Brembana about 1440, d. in 1504. He first appears active in Venice in 1468 for the construction of S. Michele at the island; in 1490 he appraises the work of the Lombardo (q.v.) in the scuola of S. Marco; in 1498 he begins the staircase of the scuola of S. Giovanni Evangelista.
In the church of S. Michele at the island Coducci introduces on the façade in Istrian stone that curved crowning which reappears in S. Zaccaria where Coducci continued the work of Antonio Gambello, raising upon the Gothicizing base the façade, grand and picturesque, crowned by three arched pediments.
Continuing the work of the Lombardo, Coducci also completed the façade of the scuola of S. Marco (now the civil hospital), especially in the asymmetrical crowning terminated by semicircular pediments and in the interior. In the scuola of S. Giovanni Evangelista, by P. Lombardo, Coducci built the staircase with two flights, skillfully accommodated within a narrow space.
Coducci also worked on the construction of S. Maria Formosa and of S. Giovanni Crisostomo. In S. Maria della Carità he is credited with the chapel of the Savior and the grand monument of the Doges Marco and Agostino Barbarigo. His is the bell tower of S. Pietro a Castello (1488–1490). An edicule in the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo is also ascribed to him.
Uncertain is Coducci’s work in civil architecture: among other things, the Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi, the small Palazzo Corner, and the Clock Tower may be attributed to him.
