CANO, Alonso. — Painter, sculptor, and architect, born in Granada on 19 March 1601, died there on 3 September 1667. Until 1638 he worked in Seville (altarpieces of St John the Evangelist and St John the Baptist in the church of St Paula, with figures largely by Montañés); thereafter, until 1652, in Madrid, producing among other works the sculptures depicting the Child with the Cross (Madrid, San Fermín) and the Crucifix of Montserrat, now in a college at Lecároz (Navarre). To his final period in Granada belong his largest works, such as St Diego and St Anthony in the church of the Ángel and St John of God in the Museum of Fine Arts.
