CANO, ALONSO. - Painter, sculptor, and architect, b. at Granata on 19 March 1601, d. there on 3 Sept. 1667.
Until 1638 he worked in Siviglia (altars of S. Giovanni Evangelista and S. Giovanni Battista, in the church of S. Paola, with figures largely by Montanes); thereafter, until 1652, in Madrid, executing among other works the sculptures representing the Child bearing the Cross (Madrid, S. Firmino) and the Crucifix of Monserrato, now in a college at Lecaroz (Navarra). To the final period, at Granata, belong the works of greatest scale, such as S. Diego and S. Antonio in the church of the Angelo and S. Giovanni di Dio in the museum of Fine Arts.
