CANO, ALONSO. - Painter, sculptor and architect, b. at Granada on 19 March 1601, d. there on 3 Sept. 1667.

Until 1638 he worked in Seville (altarpieces of St. John the Evangelist and of St. John the Baptist, in the church of St. Paula, with figures largely by Montañés); afterwards, until 1652, in Madrid, executing among other things the sculptures representing the Child with the Cross on his shoulder (Madrid, St. Firminus) and the Crucifix of Montserrat, now in a college at Lecároz (Navarre). To the last period, at Granada, belong the works of greater size, such as the St. Didacus and the St. Anthony in the church of the Angel and the St. John of God in the Museum of Fine Arts.
