COLINI, LUDOVICO. — Franciscan theologian, commonly known as L. da Castelplanio, born at Castelplanio (Ancona) on 31 March 1830, died in Rome on 19 December 1874. He donned the habit of the Friars Minor at the Porziuncola (Assisi) in 1845 and acquired a solid theological culture through study and teaching. In 1862, having become the private theologian of Bishop Bernardino Trionfetti (former Minister General of the Friars Minor and later Bishop of Terracina, Sezze, and Piperno), he accompanied him to the Vatican Council, where he became well-known and esteemed.
He published: *Esposizione del Sillabo* (Velletri 1865); *Il Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano al cospetto dell'odierna società* (Naples 1869, 2nd ed. Turin 1870); *Il Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano ed i cattolici liberali* (Turin 1870); *De controversia infallibilitatis* (Naples 1870); *Maria nel consiglio dell'Eterno, ovvero la Vergine predestinata alla missione medesima con Gesù Cristo* (4 vols., 1872 ff., 2nd ed. 1904, 3rd ed. Milan 1942, summarized by M. Andreoletti under the care of A. Gemelli): this is C.’s masterpiece and one of the most extensive modern studies of Mariology; *Seraphicus Doctor Bonaventura in Oecumenicis Catholicae Ecclesiae Conciliis cum Patribus dogmata definiens* (Rome 1874).
