COLLETTARIO

COLLECTARIUM. - Sometimes called an orationary, it derives from the sacramentary (v.) inasmuch as in ancient times only this book contained the orations recited by the bishop or the priest on behalf of the community. The ever more extensive organization of the liturgy recommended the separate collection of the orations, facilitating their growth for use primarily in the office. At first it consisted of parchments that were rolled up, whence also the name of roll.The oldest surviving example is the Ravenna scroll. Sometimes antiphons, indications of psalms, hymns, and responsories were added to the prayers so that the book would be chiefly useful to the one presiding over the office. Today's liturgy uses this book for eucharistic benediction.
