COMMISSIONER. - This name designates one of the senior officials of the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office, who, assisted by two helpers ("first" and "second companion"), has above all the task of providing for the preliminary investigation of criminal trials that must be judged by the Congregation. Both the commissary and the two companions are chosen from among the religious of the Order of Preachers.

The institution derives from the ancient tribunals of the Inquisition. Pope Pius V was commissary of the Holy Office from 1551 to 1556 (Pastor, VIII, p. 34).

The name of commissary is also used to indicate the members of any commission (v. COMMISSIONI PONTIFICE).
