Bull condemning the Chinese rites

Bull of Pope Clement XI ·

1 Clement Pope XI. "4 for the memory of things to come. From that day on which, without the suffrage of our merits, we took up the helm of the Catholic Church—a burden most grave by its very amplitude and most troublesome by the iniquity of the times—God so disposing, nothing was more at hand to us than to apply our hand to the rudder concerning those most bitter controversies which had long since arisen in the Chinese Empire between the missionaries of those parts, and which grow stronger every day, both concerning certain Chinese words used there to express the ineffable name of God, and concerning some of their rites, which certain missionaries rejected as superstitious, while others, since they bring them forward as merely civil, judged them to be permitted by the judgment of the Church and in the sense of propagating the Faith, and in the same they are in Christ Jesus.

2 With this counsel those responses, which were drawn up to various questions concerning these matters, after prolonged examination, namely begun in the time of our predecessor Pope Innocent XII, and then continued by our command over many years, and having heard the arguments of both sides, and the opinions of many theologians and Qualifiers, and the Congregation of our Venerable Brethren, the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, and the General Inquisitors against heretical depravity appointed by Apostolic authority throughout the whole Christian Republic, were given. We on the 10th of November 1704, by the same authority, confirmed and approved them.

3 Now those things which were decreed in such responses are as follows. "Since God, the Best and Greatest, cannot be suitably expressed among the Chinese by European words, in order to signify the same true God, the word Tien-chu, that is, Lord of Heaven, which is known to have been received by long and approved use among the Chinese missionaries and the faithful, is to be admitted: but the names Sien, Heaven, and Xang Ti, Supreme, Emperor, are to be entirely rejected."

4 1. For this reason tablets with the Chinese inscription King Tein, Heaven, are not to be permitted to be hung in the churches of Christians, or if already hung, are not to be retained there in the future.

5 "In no way and for no reason whatsoever is it to be permitted to the Christian faithful to be present at, to minister at, or to take part in the solemn sacrifices or oblations which are customarily made by the Chinese at each equinox of any year to Confucius and to deceased ancestors, as being imbued with superstition. Similarly, neither is it to be permitted that in the houses of Confucius, which are called by the Chinese name Miao, the same Christian faithful exercise and perform ceremonies, rites, and oblations which are done in honor of the same Confucius both in individual months at the new moon and full moon."

10 to Mandarins, or primary Magistrates, and other Officials and Learned Men; both by these same Mandarins, or Governors, and Magistrates, before they assume their dignity, or at least after they have obtained its possession; and finally by Learned Men, who, after they have been admitted to degrees, forthwith go to the Temple or Seat of Confucius. Furthermore, it is not to be permitted to Christians to make less solemn Oblations to the same in Temples or Idols dedicated to Ancestors, nor to minister in them, or in any way to serve, or to perform other Rites and Ceremonies. Likewise, it is not to be permitted to the aforesaid Christians to perform Oblations, Rites, and Ceremonies of this kind before the Tablets of Ancestors, in private houses, whether in the Sepulchres of the same Ancestors, or before the deceased are committed to burial, in their honour, as is customary, together with Gentiles, or to perform them from these, and to minister to them, or to be present; nay, all the aforesaid things, as having been weighed on both sides and all things carefully and maturely discussed, have been found to be performed in such a way that they cannot be separated from superstition, and are not even to be permitted to observers of Christian Law, with the foregoing public or secret protestation, that they are performing these things not in a religious, but in a civil and political manner only towards the deceased, and are not asking or hoping for anything from them. However, by these things that present mere material presence is not to be condemned, which, when performed superstitiously with Gentiles, without any express or tacit approval of the deeds, and being entirely removed from any ministerial participation in the same superstitious acts, sometimes happens to be afforded by Christians, when hatred and enmities cannot be avoided: provided, however, that a protestation of Faith has been made first, if it can conveniently be done, and with certain danger of subversion being guarded against. Finally, it is not to be permitted to the Christian faithful to retain Tablets of deceased Ancestors in their private houses, according to the custom of those regions, that is, with a Chinese inscription, by which the Throne or Seat of the Spirit or Soul of N. is signified; nay, nor even with another inscription by which a Seat or Throne is designated, and thus the same as the former, although expressed in different characters. But as to Tablets inscribed only with the name of the deceased, their use can be tolerated, provided that all things redolent of superstition are removed from them, and scandal being avoided, that is, provided that Christians cannot think that Tablets of this kind are retained by Christians in the same mind in which they themselves retain them, and moreover with a declaration to be added beside the Tablets themselves, by which both what the faith of Christians concerning the deceased is, and what the piety of Sons and Grandsons towards Ancestors ought to be, may be made clear; yet notwithstanding all the foregoing, it is not forbidden that towards the deceased there may be performed such things as are customary to be performed by those nations, which are not truly superstitious, nor bear the appearance of superstition, but are contained within the limits of civil and filial Rites. Moreover, what these are, and what precautions are to be employed so that they may be tolerated, is to be left to the judgment both of the Commission and of the Apostolic Visitor or Nuncio, or of him exercising his office in the Empire of China, and of the Bishops and Apostolic Vicars of those regions: who in the meantime ought to take care with all the diligence and care they can, that with Gentile ceremonies entirely removed, Christian Rites, and those for Christians, in this matter be received, which the Catholic Church piously prescribes for the deceased. After these things, however, nearly six years having elapsed, the aforesaid Cardinals, having heard the opinions of many learned men, or having discussed the matter most maturely and diligently, approved the same opinion and Mandate, or Decree, which, adhering expressly to these things, was issued by the late Charles Thomas, of blessed memory, of the same Holy Roman Church called Cardinal of Tournon, then Patriarch of Antioch, Commissioner and Apostolic Visitor General in the aforesaid Empire of China, on 17 January 1707, we have decreed that it is to be observed by all and each to whom it pertained, firmly and inviolably, under the censures and penalties expressed in the Mandate or Decree of this kind, with every colour or pretext of acting against it being entirely removed, and the same not withstanding any appeal whatsoever made by any Persons to Us and the Apostolic See, which for this reason is to be entirely rejected; we have likewise decreed and in fact rejected, as is more fully contained in the Decree issued in this matter.

11 All these things were to be fully and abundantly accomplished, so that in that field the tares which the enemy man had sown might be rooted out entirely, and all the Faithful should obey Our mandates and those of this Holy See with that humility and obedience which was fitting: especially since at the end of the aforesaid responses confirmed and approved by Us, as is promised, the Cause shall be pronounced finished in open and perspicuous words.

12 But, since, as from the same quarters not without intimate sorrow of Our heart has come to the hearing of Our Apostolate, the execution of such responses so earnestly prescribed by Us is being badly hindered by many, either under a vain and false pretext, that they have been suspended by Us, or less legitimately promulgated, or under the colour of conditions, as they are wrongly asserted, inserted in them, and to be verified before the execution itself, or of the reasons for the facts upon which the same were issued not being justified, or under the colour of further declarations to be issued by Us in this matter, or under the fear of grave dangers which both the Missionaries and the Mission itself could incur from the demanded execution, or finally under the pretext of a Decree issued long ago, namely on 22 March 1656, concerning the same Rites or Ceremonies of the Chinese issued by the aforesaid Congregation of Cardinals, and also approved by Alexander VII, Pope of blessed memory, Our Predecessor, and not without grave injury to Pontifical authority, scandal to the faithful of Christ, and detriment to the salvation of souls, it is sufficiently and greatly evaded, or at least excessively delayed

1 Clemente Papa XI.
