COPPI, ANTONIO. - Historian, b. 22 April 1783 in Andezeno (Turin), d. 26 February 1870 in Rome. He studied letters and philosophy at the College of Chieri. Eager to enter the Society of Jesus, which, although suppressed, continued to exist under another name, he went to Rome, but could not be received there. He therefore devoted himself to the study of jurisprudence and above all of history.

He consequently conceived the idea of continuing Muratori's Annali d'Italia from 1750 onward. The publication, begun in 1848, was brought to completion in 1867, in 14 vols., plus two indexes, and reaches down to 17 March 1861. C. also from time to time held positions of a political character. Thus in 1831 he was invited to draft a plan for improvements to the papal government on the basis of the Memorandum of the great powers. At the beginning of the pontificate of Pius IX he was a member of the council of censorship of the press and was counted by the Pope among the hundred councillors who were to constitute the municipal magistracy of Rome.
