CORELLI, ARCANGELO. — Violinist and composer, born at Fusignano on 17 Feb. 1653, died at Rome on 8 Jan. 1713.
In 1677 he was taken into the household of Cardinal Pamphilj in Rome as maestro di musica; three years later he passed into the service of Cardinal Ottoboni. First violinist, then director of the concerts at the Palazzo della Cancelleria, he founded a celebrated school from which many excellent pupils emerged. His compositions, six works in print, include trio sonatas: 12 church sonatas, 12 chamber sonatas, and 12 for violins and bass. The Op. 6 contains the famous “Concerto grosso.”
