ARON (AARON), PIETRO. - Musician, b. in Florence toward the end of the 15th century (1490?), d. in Venice in 1545. A lucid theorist in his treatises, he belongs to the number of those who held it necessary to break free from musical theories, thus preparing the way for Vicentino and Zarlino. He left us many theoretical works: Libri III de institutione harmonica, (Bologna 1516), the Toscanello in musica (Venice 1523, 1529, 1539), the Trattato della natura et cognitione di tutti gli tuoni di canto figurato (Venice 1525) and a Campendiolo di molti dubbi segreti et sentenze intorno al canto fermo et figurato (Milan, no date). In the period of the greatest development of polyphony he already perceived the defect that lies in composing in such a way that all the voices sing together. He also had a part in the solution of the arduous problem of acoustic ratios and of the temperament of the sounds of the octave.
