ARETINO, PAOLO. – Born in Arezzo in 1508, he was chapel master at the cathedral of his native city from 1538 to 1544; thereafter at the collegiate church of Pieve from 1544 until 1584, the year of his death. He was probably a pupil in Florence of another native of Arezzo, Francesco Corteccia, and trained a well-regarded pupil, the Aretine Orazio Tigrini, author of Il Compendio della Musica, printed in Venice in 1588. In addition to the book of madrigals for several voices, he had his Sacra Responsoria del Natale e della Settimana Santa printed (1544 and 1564); the Lamentationes (1563); the hymns for the entire year for several voices; the Magnificat for five voices and the Passio secundum Ioannem, for several voices.
