PAOLO ARETINO. — Born in Arezzo in 1508, he served as maestro di cappella in the city’s cathedral from 1538 to 1544, and then in the collegiate church of the Pieve from 1544 until his death in 1584. He was probably a pupil in Florence of another Aretine, Francesco Corteccia, and trained a notable pupil, the Aretine Orazio Tigrini, author of *Il Compendio della Musica*, printed in Venice in 1588. In addition to a book of madrigals for multiple voices, he published his *Sacra Responsoria* for Christmas and Holy Week (1544 and 1564), the *Lamentationes* (1563), hymns for the entire year in multiple voices, five-part *Magnificat*, and the *Passio secundum Ioannem* for multiple voices.
