ARETINO, PAOLO. - Born in Arezzo in 1508, he was choirmaster at the cathedral of his native city from 1538 to 1544; then at the collegiate church of the Pieve from 1544 until 1584, the year of his death. He was probably a pupil in Florence of another Aretine, Francesco Corteccia, and he trained a pupil of good repute, the Aretine Orazio Tigrini, author of: Il Compendio della Musica, printed in Venice in 1588. In addition to the book of madrigals for several voices, he had his Sacra Responsoria of Christmas and Holy Week printed (1544 and 1564); the Lamentationes (1563); the hymns for the whole year for several voices; the Magnificat for 5 voices and the Passio secundum Ioannem, for several voices.
