CORON. — Today Koronē, a city in the Peloponnese, formerly the seat of a Greek bishopric, first mentioned at the Council of Ephesus (431), and of a Latin bishopric under Venetian rule (1206–1500). Under Turkish domination (1500–1821), it was reduced to a small village, and today has only about 2,000 inhabitants. The most famous Latin bishops of C. were St. Peter (1359–63), Cristoforo Caratoni (1437–49), and Bartolomeo Lapacci (1549–57); the last two were very active in favor of the Council of Florence (1438–45).
