Also known as: Greek: Korone, Korōnē; Koroni; Italian: Corone

CORON. - Today Korōnē, a city in the Peloponnese, formerly the seat of a Greek bishopric, mentioned for the first time at the Council of Ephesus (431), and of a Latin bishopric under Venetian rule (1206-1500). In decline under Turkish rule (1500-1821), it now has only about 2,000 inhabitants. The most famous Latin bishops of C. were St. Peter (1359-63), Cristoforo Caratoni (1437-49) and Bartolomeo Lapacci (1549-57); the last two were very active on behalf of the Council of Florence (1438-45).
