CORON. - Today Korōnē, a city of the Peloponnese, formerly the seat of a Greek bishopric, mentioned for the first time at the Council of Ephesus (431), and of a Latin bishopric under Venetian rule (1206–1500). It declined under Turkish rule (1500–1821) and today has only approximately 2,000 inhabitants. The most celebrated Latin bishops of C. were St. Pietro (1359–63), Cristoforo Caratoni (1437–49), and Bartolomeo Lapacci (1549–57); the latter two were very active in support of the Council of Florence (1438–45).
