COSTANTINO III LICHUDES. - Patriarch of Constantinople (1059–63), Michele Cerulario (v.). Around 1062 he wrote to Pope Alessandro II a letter now lost but mentioned in the 38th opusculum of St. Pier Damiano, Contra errorem Graecorum de processione Spiritus S. (PL 145, 633 B), dedicated precisely to Patriarch C. The latter asked the Pope for a biblical demonstration of the doctrine of the Latins concerning the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son. At the Pope’s invitation, the above-mentioned opusculum was written. It is highly significant that, immediately after the consummation of the Byzantine schism, attempts were made to restore unity. Of Patriarch C., only a few decrees are known, concerning vigilance over morals and directed against Monophysitism; his seal is also known.
