CONSTANTINE III LICHUDES. - Patriarch of Constantinople (1059-63), immediate successor of Michael Cerularius (v.). Around 1062 he wrote to Pope Alexander II a letter now lost but mentioned in the 38th opuscule of St. Peter Damian, Contra errorem Graecorum de processione Spiritus S. (PL 145, 633 B), dedicated precisely to the patriarch C. The latter asked the Pope for a biblical demonstration of the Latin doctrine concerning the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son. At the Pope's invitation the above-mentioned opuscule was written.It is very significant that immediately after the consummation of the Byzantine schism attempts were made to restore unity. Of the patriarch C. only a few decrees are known, relating to vigilance over morals and against Monophysitism; his seal is also known.
