DODECANESE. - Gruppo di 14 isole (alcuni ne escludevano 2, cioè Rodi e Castelrosso, cosicché si avevano 12 isole secondo il rigore del termine) nel Mare Egeo, cioè Rodi (v.), Calchi, Calino, Caso, Castelrosso, Coo, Lero, Lisso, Nisiro, Patmo (v.), Piscopi, Scarpanto, Simi, Stampalia. These passed to Italy in 1912 (Castelrosso in 1921) and now belong to Greece; their inhabitants are for the most part Greek Orthodox, under 4 metropolitans belonging to the patriarchate of Constantinople. For Rhodes and Patmos v. the respective entries. The Catholic Church re-established the ancient residential see of Rhodes in 1928; already from 1897 it had erected the apostolic prefecture of Rhodes (v. also GREECE). - See plate CV.
