CONSTANTINE OF BARBENTANE. - Capuchin preacher and ascetical writer, b. at Barbençon (Hainaut, Flanders) ca. 1582, d. at Bonn on 26 (or 25) Nov. 1631 (or 1632?). From Belgium he was sent in 1611 to found the province of Cologne; definitor, master of novices, a much sought-after director of souls.
His work Les secrets sentiers de l'amour divin (Cologne 1623, and repeatedly reprinted down to our own day) has a particular representative importance in mystical literature.
C. shows in it, with unimpeachable terminology, how the soul, exercised in mortification, humility and meditation, is raised by Grace to divine knowledge and love, to end in a total union with God. In his other, longer but less widely circulated work, Anatomie de l'âme et des opérations divines en icelle (Liège 1635), published posthumously, he polemicizes effectively against a contemporary pre-Quietist movement, combating the false interpretations that the so-called "illuminati" gave to the doctrine of his confrere Benedict of Canfield (v.), especially concerning the exercise of the "essential will" of God; he further denounces, with sagacity, the deleterious influences of Protestant theories on the pseudo-mysticism of the pre-Quietists. The doctrine of Fr. C. was used by various ascetical authors, such as Card. Bona, and especially by the well-known Benedictine A. Baker (v.).
