CONSTANTINE THE AFRICAN. - Carthaginian Benedictine, converted from Islam, translator of Arabic and Greek works, d. 1087. For 39 years he traveled through the East and Egypt. In 1060 he went to Salerno, whence he moved to Montecassino and there professed the Benedictine rule.
Here, according to Wüstenfeld, is the list of his translations: Liber completus artis medicinae qui dicitur regalis dispositio or Pantegni of 'Ali Ibn 'Abbâs (d. 994); Viaticum of Abû Ga'far Ahmad Ibn al-Gazâr (d. 1004); Liber diotiorum and Liber experimentorum of the Arab ar-Râzi (d. 923); Liber diaetarum universalium et particularium, Liber urinarum, Liber febrinum, Liber de gradibus of Isbâa Isrâ'îli. Finally, some works of Hippocrates and Galen. C. A.'s translations exercised a notable influence on the school of Salerno and then on that of Chartres, and were for many scholastics almost the only manual of anatomy and physiology. It was these versions that introduced into the West the study of the physiological concomitant of knowledge. C. A.'s works were published at Lyon in 1515 and at Basel in 1539.
