COZZARELLI, GUIDOCCIO. — Sienese painter and illuminator, documented from 1450 to 1516.
His first signed work is a panel with the Madonna in trong, s. Gerolamo e il b. Giov. Colombini of 1482, in the picture gallery of Siena (no. 167); but among the paintings that best represent him are two panels in the church of the Observant Friars of Sinalunga, depicting, respectively, a Madonna tra angeli con i ss. Simone e Todaro (documented in 1483) and the Battesimo di Cristo, signed and dated 1486. In them C. reveals himself as a close follower of Matteo di Giovanni, with whom he can sometimes be confused: but his figures are more rigid, with angular draperies, heavy shadows, and a much less vivid coloring.
