COZZARELLI, GIACOMO. - Son of Bartolomeo di Marco. Sculptor and architect, b. in Siena on 20 Nov. 1455, d. on 23 March 1515. He resided in Urbino from the time when Francesco di Giorgio Martini had moved there (1477); he had some part in the interior decoration of the Ducal Palace; as architect to the Magnificent Pandolfo Petrucci, tyrant of Siena, he erected the church and convent of S. M. Maddalena at Porta Tufi (ca. 1484, destroyed in 1526), attended to the enlargement of the church and convent of S. Bernardino all'Osservanza, and executed the Palazzo del Magnifico.
Of the sculptures recorded by Sigismondo Tizio there remain only the wooden statue of St. Vincent Ferrer in S. Spirito, the terracotta one of St. Sigismund in the sacristy of the convent of the Carmine, and the most elegant bronze brackets on the exterior of the Palazzo del Magnifico, while the stucco roundels with Evangelists, Doctors of the Church and Franciscan saints of the basilica of the Osservanza were almost completely destroyed by bombing (1944). Nevertheless, there can with good probability be attributed to him the marble tomb of G. B. Tondi (d. in 1512) in the atrium of the Spedale della Scala; the great Compianto sul Cristo morto, in terracotta, in the sacristy of the Osservanza; the terracotta statues of St. Lucy and St. Nicholas in the Oratory of S. Lucia, and the wooden one of St. Nicholas of Tolentino in S. Agostino. He is the most characteristic representative of taste and artistic culture in Siena in the early 16th century. - See pl. XLVI.
