COZZA-LUZI, GIUSEPPE. — Learned Italian Basilian monk, born at Bolsena on 4 December 1837. He became a Basilian in the Abbey of Grottaferrata, where he was ordained hieromonk (1860) and later secretary to Abbot Contieri (1866), whom he succeeded (1879). In 1882 he was called to the Vatican as assistant librarian. He died at Bolsena on 1 June 1905.
Cozza-Luzi left a strong mark of his personality on the liturgical reform of the Abbey of Grottaferrata, but even more in the cultural sphere, where he stood out as an exceptionally gifted writer in the fields of palaeography, history, archaeology, theology and liturgy. In collaboration with his teacher Toscani he published in 1862 his first essay De Immaculata Deiparae Conceptione, hymnologia Graecorum (Rome 1862). According to A. Rocchi (A. Mai, Nova Patrum Bibliotheca, X, Rome 1905, pp. xxv-xxviii) Cozza-Luzi’s publications numbered 130 in all, to which must be added numerous articles in journals.
