CROTTI di COSTIGLIOLE, EDOARDO. - Politician, b. 20 Oct. 1799 at Costigliole, d. at Aosta on 25 September 1870. Having devoted himself to a military career and distinguished himself in suppressing the Piedmontese uprisings of 1821, he later became embassy secretary in Paris (1837), where he effectively opposed the first French designs upon Nice and Savoy, and subsequently ambassador to Switzerland (1848).
He energetically opposed the approval of the law that sought to make future ministers of worship soldiers (1868), and on 20 Aug. 1870 he abstained from voting for the Pisanelli order of the day expressing confidence in the government’s political course in order to «resolve the Roman question according to national
aspirations». Almost on the eve of his death, on 4 Sept. of the same year, in the face of intrigues aimed at provoking bloody disturbances in Rome, he addressed a noble letter of protest to President Lanza.
