CUSMANO, GIACOMO. - Priest, founder of the pious "Work of the Mouthful of the Poor," b. at Palermo on 15 March 1834, d. there on 14 March 1888. He was a physician when in 1859 he took up the ecclesiastical habit; he was ordained in Dec. 1860. After having seen a family that set aside a mouthful for a poor person at every course, he too began to collect the superfluous and distribute it to the needy, founding for this purpose the association of the "Mouthful of the Poor," canonically erected in 1868. After having created various pious institutes at Palermo and in Sicily, he founded in 1880 the Servants of the Poor (v. BOCCONE del POVERO) and then the Servants of the Poor, laymen, and, in 1887, the Missionary Servants of the Poor to direct the two families.
