D'AFFLITTO, EUSTACHIO. - Of the dukes of Roc
gloriosa, in which the family of Giorgio Castriota known as Scanderbeg came to an end, b. in Roccagloriosa, province of Salerno, in 1742 and d. in Naples in 1785. He had wished to become a Jesuit, a confrere of his first teachers; he became a priest instead and later entered the Dominican Order.
He taught philosophy in the convent of S. Domenico in Naples, and ecclesiastical history at the University; the esteem he earned for himself brought him membership in the Academy of Sciences and Letters and the directorship of the Royal Library and Museum of Capodimonte. He was a man of great learning and erudition, especially versed in the literary history of his country, to which he intended to dedicate the biographies of its writers; however, he was only able to publish the first volume, which included writers from Abate to Azzolini (Memorie degli scrittori del regno di Napoli, Naples 1782), as he was taken by an early death.
