DANIEL of Samarate. — Capuchin missionary, in secular life Felice Rossini, born 17 June 1876, entered the Lombard Capuchins in 1891, and departed for the Upper Brazilian mission in 1898. He distinguished himself particularly in directing the colony of St. Anthony of Prata. In caring for the sick he contracted leprosy. After futile attempts at cure in Italy, he wished to return to the mission, and in 1914 confined himself in the leper asylum of Tocunduba (Pará), devoting himself to the spiritual care of the sick. This heroic charity, which he persevered in until his death (19 May 1924), earned him the title of “apostle of the lepers.”
