DANIELE OF SAMARATE. - Capuchin missionary, in the world Felice Rossini, b. June 11, 1876, entered the Lombard Capuchins in 1891, and left for the mission of Upper Brazil in 1898. He distinguished himself particularly in the direction of the colony of S. Antonio do Prata. While caring for the sick he contracted leprosy. After futile attempts at a cure in Italy, he wished to return to the mission, in order to shut himself away in 1914 in the leper colony of Tocunduba (Pará), devoting himself to the spiritual care of the sick. This heroic charity, in which he persevered until his death (May 19, 1924), earned him the title of "apostle of the lepers."
