DANIELE and COMPAGNI, saints. - Franciscans, martyred in Ceuta, Morocco, on 19 Oct. 1227. Their names are D., Agnello, Samuele, Donnulo,
Leone, and Niccolò. According to Wadding, D., provincial minister of Calabria, was originally from Belvedere in the same region, s. Niccolò from Sassoferrato, and s. Donnulo from Montalcini. The origin of the others is unknown. In the first months of 1227 they set out for Morocco and landed at Ceuta, initially establishing themselves in the suburbs of the city. At the beginning of October they entered the city to preach the Gospel there. Arrested on 10 Oct., after various trials and attempts to make them apostatize, having confessed and encouraged one another, they were beheaded. Their feast is celebrated on the same day.
