DANIEL AND COMPANIONS, Saints. - Franciscans, martyred in Ceuta in Morocco on 19 Oct. 1227. Their names are D., Agnello, Samuel, Donnulus, Leo and Nicholas. According to Wadding, D., provincial minister of Calabria, was a native of Belvedere in that same region, St. Nicholas was from Sassoferrato, and St. Donnulus from Montalcini. The origin of the others is unknown. In the first months of 1227 they set out for Morocco, and landed at Ceuta, settling at first in the suburbs of the city. At the beginning of Oct. they entered the city to preach the Gospel there. Arrested on 10 Oct., after various trials and attempts to make them apostatize, having confessed their faith and encouraged one another, they were beheaded. Their feast is celebrated on the same day.
