DUBOIS, Pierre (Petrus de Bosco). - Writer b. ca. 1250 at Coutances or its surroundings (Normandy) and d. ca. 1321. Between 1269-72 he studied in Paris. In 1300 he was a lawyer for royal cases at Coutances, an office which from 1306 he also exercised in the service of Edward I of England.
A typical figure of a medieval writer, he took an important part in the struggle of Philip the Fair against the Church, especially in the questions of Boniface VIII and the Templars. His writings of greatest interest in this regard are the Deliberatio super agendis a Philippo rege contra epistolam Bonifacii papae VIII, and the Supplication du peuple de France au roi contre Boniface VIII (ed. P. Dupuy, Histoire du différend, etc., Paris 1655, pp. 44 the first and 214-19 the second). His principal work, dedicated to Edward I of England, is the De recuperatione Terrae Sanctae (ed. V. Langlois, Paris 1891).
