Dasbach, Georg Friedrich

DASBACH, GEORG FRIEDRICH. - German priest and politician, b. at Horhausen in the Westerwald on 9 Dec. 1846, d. at Bonn on 11 Oct. 1907.

Ordained a priest in 1871, he exercised the pastoral ministry for several years at Trier. During the Kulturkampf he organized the Catholic press of Trier (Paulinuskart, Trierische Landeszeitung), of the Saar and of the southern Rhineland, and was one of the most effective propagators of the Center's program in that part of Germany. He concerned himself in particular with the interests of the peasants and in 1884 founded the "Peasants' Association" at Trier.

A deputy to the Prussian Diet in 1890 and a member of the Reichstag in 1898, he never failed to advocate the freedom of the Church and the confessional school.
