DASSELBACH, GEORG FRIEDRICH. — German priest and politician, born at Hohausen in the Westerwald on 9 Dec. 1846, died at Bonn on 11 Oct. 1907.
Ordained priest in 1871, he exercised the pastoral ministry for several years at Trier. During the Kulturkampf he organized the Catholic press of Trier (Paulinusblatt, Trierische Landeszeitung), of the Saar and of southern Rhineland, and was one of the most effective promoters of the Centre Party’s programme in that part of Germany. He took a particular interest in the welfare of farmers and in 1884 founded the “Farmers’ Association” at Trier.
Deputy to the Prussian Diet in 1890 and member of the Reichstag in 1898, he never ceased to advocate for the freedom of the Church and for denominational schools.
