DASBACH, GEORG FRIEDRICH. — German priest and politician, b. at Horhausen in the Westerwald on 9 December 1846, d. at Bonn on 11 October 1907.
Ordained a priest in 1871, he exercised the pastoral ministry at Trier for several years. During the Kulturkampf, he organized the Catholic press of Trier (Panlinakart, Trierische Landeszeitung), the Saar region and the southern Rhineland, and was one of the most effective propagators of the Centre’s programme in that part of Germany. He was particularly concerned with the interests of the peasants and in 1884 founded the “Peasants’ Association” at Trier.
A deputy to the Prussian Diet in 1890 and a member of the Reichstag in 1898, he never ceased advocating the freedom of the Church and confessional schooling.
