DAVID, GÉRARD. - Painter, born at Oudewater near Gonda (southern Holland) between 1450 and 1460, died at Bruges on 13 Aug. 1523. He is the principal representative of the Bruges school, where from 1483 he worked under the influence of the Flemish masters, especially Memling, later yielding, in more advanced age, to the manner of the painters of Antwerp, above all Q. Metsys.
At Bruges, in the Municipal Museum, are several of his works, among which particularly significant are the Story of Sisamnes (1488) and the Baptism of Jesus (1500-1507), which, together with the painting in the Museum of Rouen and the Virgin among Virgins of 1509, constitute the nucleus around which criticism has grouped many other paintings, some of them workshop productions, scattered throughout the museums of Europe and America.
