DAVID, GÉRARD. - Painter, born at Oudewater near Gouda (southern Holland) between 1450 and 1460, died at Bruges on 13 Aug. 1523. He is the principal representative of the Bruges school, where he worked from 1483 under the influence of Flemish masters, especially Memling, later adopting the style of the painters of Antwerp, particularly Quentin Metsys.
In Bruges, the Municipal Museum holds some of his works, among which particularly noteworthy are the *Story of Sismone* (1488) and the *Baptism of Christ* (1500-1507), which, together with the painting in the Rouen Museum and the *Virgin among Virgins* of 1509, form the nucleus around which criticism has grouped many other paintings, some of them from his workshop, scattered through museums in Europe and America.
