DAVID, GÉRARD. - Painter, b. at Oudewater near Gouda (southern Holland) between 1450 and 1460, d. at Bruges on 13 Aug. 1523. He is the principal representative of the Bruges school, where from 1483 he worked under the influence of the Flemish masters, above all Memling, only to yield, at a more advanced age, to the manner of the painters of Antwerp, especially Q. Metsys.

In Bruges, in the Municipal Museum, are some of his works, among which particularly significant are the History of Sisamnes (1488) and the Baptism of Jesus (1500-1507) which, together with the painting in the Museum of Rouen and with the Virgin among the Virgins of 1509, constitute the nucleus around which criticism has grouped many other paintings, some of them workshop pieces, scattered through the museums of Europe and America.
