DAMIANO OF BERGAMO. - In the world Zambelli D., an inlay-worker friar, born in Bergamo between 1490 and 1500, died in Bologna on 30 August 1549.

The choir stalls of the Bergamasque church of S. Bartolomeo, though originally in that of S. Domenico, are identified as his youthful work, of a design still so frankly fifteenth-century as to justify the conviction that it goes back to Bramantino and Zenale. Having become a friar (1528), he worked in Bologna in the church of the Dominicans on the choir stalls and on some inlays now in the sacristy of the church, which are very beautiful. In 1546 he was in Genoa, where he executed three inlays for the Cathedral, one of which is signed and dated.

An artist very well known and admired in his own time, he was able to combine with a rare craftsmanly skill a particular taste for graduated chromatic harmonies arising in his inlays from the varying tones of the wood grains.
