DE GROOT, JOHANN VINCENT. – Dominican apologist, born in Schiedam (Netherlands) on 4 July 1848, died in Amsterdam on 26 February 1922. For more than 25 years he held the chair of Thomistic philosophy, founded at that time, at the University of Amsterdam. He also distinguished himself as a lecturer and spiritual director. He wrote extensively; particularly well known is the Summa apologetica de Ecclesia catholica ad mentem s. Thomae Aq. (Regensburg 1890).
