DELACROIX, EUGÈNE. - Painter b. at Charenton St-Maurice on 25 Apr. 1794, d. at Paris on 13 Aug. 1863.
First a pupil of Guérin (1816) and then of the School of Fine Arts of Paris (1818), after a journey to Italy he turned decisively toward the search for new means of expression. Generally regarded as the typical representative of French pictorial Romanticism, in opposition to Ingres, esteemed the most characteristic expression of Classicism, E. D., besides being a great colorist, must be considered for his power to realize images by means of an energetic brushstroke that draws and models forms in a dense chromatic mass. Spontaneous, passionate, emphatic, he sets against the characteristic descriptive and finished methods of the traditional intellectualist academy the rights of free fantasy, the ardor for pure pictorial research. After painting admirable small pictures rich in verve and heroic impulses and large compositions on historical subjects or of literary inspiration such as the Barque of Dante (1822), the Death of Sardanapalus (1827), the Battle of Taillebourg (1837), D. also devoted himself to vast mural compositions such as the frescoes of the Palais Bourbon and the Luxembourg, some also on religious subjects, such as the frescoes of the chapel of the Sts. Angels in the church of St. Sulpice in Paris (1861).
