DOEG (Hebrew Dō'ēgh, "Sad"). - Chief of Saul's herdsmen, an Edomite (perhaps an Aramean, according to the Septuagint and the non-Hebraized form Dō'ēgh in 1 Sam. 22:18, 22 Heb.). While David, fleeing Saul's persecution, was passing through Nob, D., who was there "detained" in the tabernacle, perhaps to carry out his turn of service, to which foreigners were obliged, saw the high priest Ahimelech hand over to the fugitive the showbread and the sword of Goliath, after having consulted the Lord for him (1 Sam. 21:7; 21:8 Heb.). For shady motives, under the guise of loyalty to King Saul, he reported to him what he had seen. He then murdered with his own hand, when the king's other servants refused, the high priest and 85 priests of Nob, whose inhabitants he also exterminated (1 Sam. 22:9, 18-22). Ps. 51:2 calls him "hero of disaster, slanderous tongue, fabricator of deceits," and foretells for him "uprooting from the land of the living." Gino Bressa
