DOMENICA, saint, martyr. – She is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on 6 July. She may perhaps be the Greek martyr Ciriaca (Κυριαχή), who died at Nicomedia during the persecution of Diocletian and is mentioned in the Greek martyrologies, her name being Latinized as D. According to the Passio, D., captured together with her parents, was taken to Nicomedia where, after causing the idols in a temple to fall and enduring several tortures, she was beheaded. Relics of D. may perhaps have been transported to Tropea in Calabria, where she was subsequently believed to have been a local martyr.
