Domenico of Prussia (of Trier)

DOMENICO of PRUSSIA (of TREVIRI). - Carthusian writer, b. in Prussia about the year 1382, d. at Treviri on 21 Dec. 1460. Having entered the Carthusian monastery of Treviri in 1410, he spent his whole life there, except for an interval of a few years devoted to the foundation of the Carthusian monastery of Rettel (diocese of Metz) in 1415. He acquired a reputation as a mystic through the autobiographical description of visions and revelations in the unpublished Liber experientiarum. He practised a particular devotion to the childhood of Our Lord and propagated the Holy Rosary, already existing in the Church, adding to each Ave a brief phrase recalling the mystery to be meditated upon, e.g.: «...fructus ventris tui Iesus, qui natus est pro nobis». He spent his last 17 years amid continual physical sufferings.
