DUPASQUIER, SÉBASTIEN. - Scotist philosopher and theologian of the 17th century, considered one of the most representative of the school at the close of that century. Born at Chambéry ca. 1630, died in 1718. A pious religious, he belonged to the province of St. Bonaventure of the Conventuals in France, of whom he was provincial minister in 1665. Through his teaching and his writings, notable above all for clarity and concision, he contributed greatly to spreading and defending Scotist doctrine. A traditional philosopher and theologian, he nevertheless had original views of importance for the development of the two sciences.
Principal works: Summa philosophiae scholasticae et scotisticae (4 vols., Lyon 1692; Padua 1705, 1718, 1732);
Summa theologiae scotisticae (8 vols., ibid. 1695; Padua 1706, 1719, 1743; Chambéry 1698-1706); Tractatus postumus et ultimus de novissimis nostris et mundi (Chambéry 1718; edited by his great-nephew Fr. Bruiset). He also wrote: De obligatione ad mortale in praeceptis aequipollentibus Regulae franciscanae adversus P. Nicolas stantem pro sola obligatione ad veniale (Annecy 1683); L'attrition suffisante pour la rémission des péchés dans le sacrement de Pénitence (2 vols., ibid. 1687).
