EMMERICH of HUNGARY, St. — Son of St. Stephen, king of Hungary, and of Gisella, sister of St. Henry II, king of Germany. Born in the year 1007 at Stuhlweissenburg, he was educated by Bishop Gerard of Csanad. E., the most faithful of his father’s collaborators, was to complete the work of making Hungary a united national and Christian state, and for this purpose St. Stephen wrote for him the Admonitiones, which form part of the Corpus Iuris Hungarici, but he died prematurely on 2 Sept. 1031. Pope Gregory VII canonized him in the year 1083 together with his parent. In 1921 he was proclaimed patron of Hungarian youth associated in the “Focolare Emericiano.”
