ENACIMS (Hebrew 'Anāqīm). - An indigenous Canaanite population, driven out of the country by Joshua (Josh. 11:21). The expulsion of the sons of Anak from Hebron, Dabir (Kiriath Sepher) and Anab was the work of Caleb, son of Jephunneh (Josh. 15:13 ff.). The E. are considered "giants" (Num. 13:22, 28, 33; Deut. 1:28; 2:10 f.; 21; 9:2).

They are mentioned in an Egyptian list of Palestinian tribes of the 20th century B.C. in conflict with Egypt. One of the three princes is called 'h-r-m (a similar name in Num. 1:13; the etymology is uncertain, as is that of E., 'n-q). Sometimes E. appears to have been used to indicate the indigenous Canaanite populations as a whole (Deut. 9:2).
