HERACLAS, Saint. - Born around 180, he studied philosophy together with Origen, by whom he was converted to Christianity and later associated by him as a coadjutor in catechetical teaching, in the Didascaleum of Alexandria. When Origen had to abandon the magisterium in 230, E. became his successor. He was ordained priest by Bishop Demetrius, whom he succeeded in the Alexandrian see. Despite the ancient friendship that bound him to Origen, as bishop he maintained the measures already taken against him by his predecessor, not permitting his return to Alexandria. E. died in 247, after 16 years of episcopate. Feast on 14 July.
