HEROD ATTICUS. - N. a Maratona nel 101 d. C. da Tiberio Claudio Attico Erode, che gli lasciò in eredità ingenti ricchezze. Se ne servì per procurarsi libri e maestri che lo fecero una delle più cospicue figure letterarie del suo tempo; e per arricchire Atene, Alessandria, Olimpia, Delfi, Corinto, Troia e Camisio di belle costruzioni.His wealth and culture facilitated his access to various public offices (in 125 he was prefect of Asia; in 127 agoranomos in Athens; in 140 tutor to Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus; in 133 consul); but his frank and violent character on the one hand, and on the other his love of teaching, kept him away from public life. In Athens he kept a school of rhetoric, in which the most illustrious sophists of the time were trained, among them Claudius Hadrian of Tyre, who delivered the funeral eulogy at the death of his master (177). Of his writings nothing remains but the Περὶ πολιτικο, whose authenticity, however, is still much debated.
