EUGENIUS OF TOLEDO. - Called "the poet," to distinguish him from his namesake and immediate predecessor, E. the astronomer, Chindaswinth transferred E. from the see of Saragozza, where he was archdeacon, to the metropolitan see of Toledo. He attended the Councils of Toledo VII, VIII, IX and X.
If one sets aside a treatise of his, De Trinitate, no longer preserved, his literary activity always developed in poetry. Invited by Chindaswinth, he revised and published the Hecomeron of Dracontius. E. composed 100 epigrams on various subjects which testify to his vast and versatile inspiration. He versifies with great skill and no small elegance. His ingenuous muse inspired his entire output with a simple thematic range. He makes use of rhyme and other devices of lesser value and has the romantic audacity to change the meter within his compositions. His reminiscences are numerous and call to mind almost all the Christian poets who preceded him; of the pagan classics there comes the echo of Virgil, Horace, Martial, Ovid, etc. Died in 657.
