DAUGHTERS OF SAINT ANNE. - Institute founded in Piacenza in 1866 by Rosa Gattorno (b. in Genoa in 1831, d. in Rome in 1900), a woman of great virtue who, after the death of her husband, devoted herself entirely to works of charity. The purpose of the foundation is the education of orphans, care for the sick and the elderly, and schools for poor children. The Institute was approved by the Holy See in 1892, and today it has about 8,000 religious sisters in more than 400 houses, many of them in mission territories.
