DAUGHTERS OF SAINT MARY OF PROVIDENCE (COMO). - Don Luigi Guanella, having become parish priest of Pianello Lario in 1881, found there an orphanage for girls begun by his predecessor, with the assistance of some pious Daughters of Mary Immaculate, at the head of whom was Marcellina Bosatta. He took special care of it and reorganized it both in discipline and in finances, and he called that group of Daughters of Mary who wished to continue to look after it "F. di S. M. della P.", giving them suitable regulations, from which the constitutions of the Institute later developed, and in 1885 a special religious habit.

Thus ordered, the Institute grew, passed beyond the boundaries of the diocese and bore consoling fruits everywhere, so that the Holy See granted it the decree of praise in 1901 and the decree of approval of the Institute and of approval on an experimental basis of the constitutions on Sept. 27, 1908. The definitive approval of these came on May 19, 1917. On Oct. 18, 1929 the Sacred Congregation of Religious approved the modifications to the constitutions, to bring them into conformity with the Code.

The special purpose of the Institute is the care of and assistance to orphans, the mentally deficient and abandoned women. The Institute had, in 1943, 43 houses with 1050 professed sisters.
