PHILIP OF SIDE. - Christian historian of the 5th century, born at Side, in Pamphylia. There he was a disciple of Rhodon, and later the successor of Didymus the Blind as head of the Alexandrian Didaskaleion. At Constantinople he was ordained deacon by St. John Chrysostom, with whom he had cordial relations, and afterward priest. Unsuccessfully, he presented his candidacy three times for the patriarchal see. He refuted the books of Julian the Apostate Against the Galileans.

Around 430 he published the Christian History, from the creation of the world to his own times, in 36 books and nearly 1000 chapters. Only scanty fragments remain, containing inaccuracies that would demonstrate the value of the work. Socrates (Hist. eccl., VII, 26-27; cf. 29, 35) states that he did not observe chronological order and inserted the most varied descriptions and notions.
