Archbishop of Salzburg, b. 27 May 1679 at Munich, d. 22 Oct. 1744 at Salzburg. Bishop of Lavant in 1718, then of Seckau and Ljubljana, on 4 Oct. 1727 he was appointed Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. After having in vain attempted the conversion of the Protestants in his diocese, who, in agreement with their German coreligionists, were plotting a revolt, he was forced to issue in 1731 an edict of emigration. Thus more than 20,000 Protestants left the Salzburg region, of whom about 16,000 moved to Prussia, and the others to Hanover, Holland, and North America.
