Fiume, Ignatius

FIUME, IGNAZIO

FIUME, IGNATIUS. - Dominican bishop and polemicist, b. near Aversa in 1621, d. in Naples in May 1694. A religious in Naples, professor and finally regent of the Studium of S. Maria della Sanità, he had among his disciples the future Dominican cardinal F. T. Howard, whom he instructed on the best way to refute the errors of the Lutherans and Calvinists. Appointed bishop of Polignano (23 June 1681), he preserved the simplicity of religious life and distributed his revenues to the poor.

He left a comprehensive treatise of theology: Schola veritatis adversus mendacia Lutheri, Calvini et protestantium erecta, I, Naples 1675; II, ibid. 1677; III, ibid. 1680; IV, ibid. 1688.
