Fornaciari, Luigi — Azione Romana

FORNACIARI, LUIGI. - Magistrate and philologist,
b. at Lucca on 17 Dec. 1798, d. there on 23 Nov. 1858.
President of the criminal Rota, councillor of State,
royal advocate with the guardianship of wards and of the poor
in the duchy of Lucca, procurator general in the Grand
Duchy of Tuscany, he discharged his various offices with
rectitude.

As a teacher of rhetoric he adopted a method that seemed
new and bold, as the Exempi di bello strivere (Lucca 1835) show. A convinced Catholic, he drew close to liberal ideas
and collaborated on the Pragmologia cattolica (an apologetic Lucchese journal
that ran from 1828 to 1851) when
this paper became less reactionary in politics and Rosminian
in philosophy. His writings are, for the most part, en-trusted to the Atti della R. Accademia Lucchese, but the
Discorsi filologici (Naples 1858), the Prose (Florence
1874) and the Epistolario (ibid. 1899), incomplete, stand
apart. His discourses Della po-vertà in Lucca are evidence of his humanitarian
nature, and from them a sketch of a system of assistance could be derived.
