MENZINI, BENEDETTO. - Priest, poet, b. in Florence on 29 March 1646, d. in Rome on 7 Nov. 1704. Of lively intellect and solid classical culture, he was a professor of eloquence in Florence and in Prato. In Rome, where he moved in 1685, he enjoyed protection and favors, a canonical prebend from Pope Innocent XII and the teaching of eloquence in the archiginnasio; in 1701, the appointment as assistant in the same chair at the University. He was one of the first Arcadians.
He wrote: L'arte poetica, five books in terza rima, published in 1699, following in the footsteps of the Poetics of Aristotle and Horace. The other works, such as Il terrestre paradiso and the Poesie, published in 1680, show the influence of Tasso and Chiabrera; while the Satire, published posthumously in 1718, are an invective against the society of his time (and especially that of Florence), and a poorly contained outburst against rivals and the envious. Not very original, M. has the merit of a lively and genuine language, of an easy verse often seasoned with popular turns of phrase.
