FROBENIUS FORSTER. - Benedictine, born at Königsfeld on 30 August 1709, died at Ratisbon on 11 October 1791. He entered the monastery of St Emmeran at Ratisbon in 1727, where, after ordination to the priesthood, he taught philosophy. Later (1744–47) he was professor at the University of Salzburg. In 1762 he was elected Prince-Abbot of St Emmeran.
He promoted the study of the natural sciences and Oriental languages in his monastery, for whose teaching he called upon the Maurist Father C. Lancelot. In various writings he dealt with the systems of Leibniz and Wolff. His principal work is the edition of the works of Alcuin (Ratisbon 1777, reprinted in PL 100–101).
