FRANGIPANI, FABIO MIRTO. — Bishop of Nazareth, d. in March 1587. In Aug. 1568 he was sent by Pius V as nuncio to France, where he remained until 1572.
He worked to induce King Charles IX to fight the Huguenots more energetically, and often found himself in difficulty in the face of Catherine de’ Medici’s ambiguous policy. On 5 Nov. 1572 he was appointed Bishop of Nazareth. He undertook further missions in France in 1574 and 1578. In 1585 Sixtus V sent him once again as nuncio to France. His appointment was initially unwelcome to Henry III, but later F. won the king’s sympathy and friendship, becoming a trusted adviser.
