FRANGIPANI, FABIO MIRTO. - Bishop of Nazareth, d. in March 1587. In August 1568 he was sent by Pius V as nuncio to France, where he remained until 1572.
He worked to induce King Charles IX to fight the Huguenots more energetically, and often found himself in difficulties in the face of the ambiguous policy of Catherine de' Medici. On 5 November 1572 he was appointed bishop of Nazareth. He had other missions in France in 1574 and in 1578. In 1585 Sixtus V sent him again as nuncio to France. His appointment was at first unwelcome to Henry III, but afterward F. won the sympathy and friendship of the king, whose trusted counsellor he became.
