BROTHERS OF MERCY (Montabaur, Limburg). - The first origins of this Congregation of lay brothers go back to 1852, in which year some young men, under the direction of Peter Loetschert, began to live a common life, dedicating themselves to the care of the sick at Hilscheid, in the district of Montabaur.

On June 29, 1856 the bishop of Limburg gave the associates a religious habit and on Nov. 28, 1858 he received their first religious vows. The Institute soon spread in Germany and Holland, obtaining from the Holy See the decree of praise on Sept. 21, 1888. On Dec. 20, 1800 it received definitive approval together with the temporary approval of the constitutions, which were then definitively approved on Apr. 10, 1921. Its purpose is to assist the sick both in hospitals and at home.

In 1949 there were 31 houses, with 200 professed.
